Folk Dance and Music Festival, tours and guest performances enrich Háromszék Dance Theatre’s November Program

35th Folk Dance and Music Festival
This month, lovers of folk music and dance are in for a particularly rich program. The Háromszék Dance Theatre, together with the Lajtha László Foundation, is organizing the 35th Folk Dance and Music Festival, which will take place on November 7–8 in Sfântu Gheorghe. The two-day event will be hosted at the Tamási Áron Theatre, the Háromszék Dance Studio, the Székely Mikó College Conference Hall, and the Óriáspince Event Hall.

The program includes the 11th Székelyföld Lad Dance Competition, a solo concert by the legendary Muzsikás ensemble for the audience in Sfântu Gheorghe, a children’s performance by the Maros Art Ensemble, and, of course, performances by the host, Háromszék Dance Theatre, this time in a co-production with the Udvarhely Folk Dance Workshop. The festival will also feature children’s programs, professional workshops, photo exhibitions, and dance houses.

On Stage: Sunset
On November 16, our company travels to Miercurea Nirajului where the audience will see our performance Sunset. This new, mystical dance play will also be presented in Tg. Secuiesc on November 20 and 21, with two performances.

We will close the month with this performance, which the audience can see on November 27 at the Háromszék Dance Studio.

Touring the Ritka magyar Co-Production
Our co-production with the Udvarhely Folk Dance Workshop, Ritka magyar – In Memory of Zoltán Kallós, will be presented two more times after the 35th Folk Dance and Music Festival: on November 17 in Târgu Mureș and on November 26 in Miercurea Ciuc.

More about the performance:

“- Singing is good because the wings of the song carry your sigh to God…

A folk song hides neither joy nor sorrow; it speaks of everything…” – this conversation takes place between Uncle Zoli and one of his favorite singers during a collection trip.

Our performance is inspired by Zoltán Kallós’ dedication, persistence, and selfless work. It explores his life journey—from his parents’ meeting, through his childhood, following his collecting trips, and through the hardships of his life—while honoring his legacy. It is, in fact, an almost impossible task to condense the enormous body of work he left for us into a single performance. With exemplary humility and modesty, as he said when receiving the Kossuth Prize: “I did my duty, to do something for the community I belong to.”

Contemporary Folk Dance in Budapest

This month we are also visiting Budapest: on Sunday, November 23, we will perform at the House of Traditions (Hagyományok Háza), presenting an excerpt from our dance theatre piece ECCE HOMO as part of the Contemporary Folk Dance Anthology organized by the Martin György Folk Dance Association.

Guest Performance by Udvartér Theatre from Tg. Secuiesc

In mid-November, Udvartér Theatre will visit Sfântu Gheorghe with a guest performance. Alexandru Popa’s play The Secret of Happiness will be staged on November 18 at the Háromszék Dance Studio.

More about the performance:

The piece explores the inner dynamics of contemporary relationships using delicate psychological tools, gradually building tension. It poses a question that resonates across all ages: What is the secret of happiness and a good life? The play dismantles the stereotypes behind classical “five steps to happiness” recipes.

The clichéd image of happiness—a successful man (Tom), an ideal wife (Ana), and a true friend (David)—falls apart in a masterfully woven manipulative game, unleashing a torrent of emotions. The search for happiness and the meaning of existence are sharply felt through our middle-aged characters, with questions that are both poignant and deeply layered.

As secrets are revealed one by one, all three characters are forced to redefine what happiness means to them and confront the events of their lives, each other, and ultimately themselves.
