On May 15, 2025, the Háromszék Dance Theatre will premiere its dance-theatre production ECCE HOMO at the Liviu Ciulei Hall of the Bulandra Theatre in Bucharest. The performance brings to life the paintings of Mihály Munkácsy through the means of movement and music. This guest performance marks the first collaboration between the company from Sfântu Gheorghe and the Bulandra Theatre.
Directed by Tamás Farkas and Ernő Tapasztó, the production intertwines dance, music, and visual arts to present Munkácsy’s dramatic and emotionally charged world, casting a new light on the famous artist’s oeuvre.
Mihály Munkácsy (1844–1900) is one of the most renowned figures of Hungarian painting. His works capture the sufferings and inner struggles of the human soul. The performance centers around iconic paintings such as The Yawning Servant, House of Mourning, Churning Woman, Brushwood Gatherer, Ballad, Portrait of Franz Liszt, Death of Mozart, Christ before Pilate, as well as Ecce Homo and Golgotha. These paintings reflect not only the painter’s technical genius but also the deepest sufferings and trials of human life. This unique production offers the audience a chance to experience how painting transforms into a dynamic, moving form and how the stories depicted on the canvas come to life through dance. The images that once spoke quietly on the canvas now come alive through movement, sounds, and emotions.
The music for the performance was composed by Levente Fazakas; costume design by Cristina Breteanu; props by Ádám Zayzon; set design by Zsuzsi Szőke; visuals and projections by Előd Izsák. The creative team also includes art history consultant Gabriella Gyarmati. The choreographer is Tamás Farkas, assisted by Ágnes Farkas. The production is co-directed by Tamás Farkas and Ernő Tapasztó.
For Háromszék Dance Theatre, this performance represents an exciting artistic experiment. The guest performance provides an opportunity to draw the attention of the Bucharest audience to the values of Hungarian culture and the richness of its visual arts, in a language that everyone understands: the language of dance.
